Why Should We Care?
From the beginning of time, we, as a species have been reliant on tools that have gradually advanced to compromise for our relative lack of physical prowess compared to the existing dangers back then. Most recently, after many revolutions of which includes the famous industrial revolution that changed the outlook we had on technology and the way of using it, we have transcended our ancestors to become the strongest and most dominant community on our planet. Today, we have machines that ancient man could never have dreamed of, machines that could accomplish what no creature on earth could ever hope to, machines of unimaginable complixity that we use with ease and with no second thought, yet if we were asked to break down these components very minimally, we would struggle and often give up. As creators of these machine, it is manditory we understand their core components.
The nowaday common cellphone or internet in general, many people who have very little understanding or think that they have substantial understaning of wireless technology often become victim of it from the lack of comprehension on a subject that is, in reality, much more complex than they thought. Many think it’s without a doubt that large media corporations are completely safe due to the simple fact that they’re well known and it would be a huge mistake to ruin they reputation just to exploit a few and while that is true for the majarity of things, there are still many aspects that users of media such as Facebook and Instagram that people give a blind eye too which sometimes can result in unfavorable situations. Recent studies done by Business Insider reveiled the shocking fact that 97% of people from the ages 18-34 don’t actually read the terms and conditions when using medias and considering that that is the main age group where technology is being used the most, it’s quite easy to disregard any important information that could affect you.
Through more studies done by Dan Russell, an anthropologist working for the highly reputable company, Google, has estimated that 90% of people nowadays are incapable of typing the proper way which means that all ten fingers are being used effectively. This shows that even in a field of technology that is rapidly advancing more than any other field of matter has ever, we are slowly, in a way, devolving. Relating to the previous subject, the is promotes ineffectivity as it’s very obvious and proven through many official tests and just day to day situations that the now popular “hunt and peck” method of typing is far inferior to traditional memorized typing.
Onto another commonplace piece of technology, recent studies done by the well know Fox News showed that 41% of Americans where unable to identify something as simple as a car engine when present with a picture of one, 36% of Americans were unable to tell what the first step to fixing a simple flat tire was, and 19% of Americans were not confident if they were paying the right price when sending their car to a mechanic. This is quite alarming considering how common cars are and how essential they have become in modern living. This is an issue because this shows that we struggle even to such relatively simple tasks and this lack of independance is what greatly reduces effectivity. This can also be dangerous as not knowing the basics of a car means that at any time one could need a mechanic and if one is not in the radius of one, then it could spell quite a large problem for that person. On the brighter side, this is an excellent opportunity to learn about new things that you never learned before. An opportunity to understand simplistic things that we use everyday just as one understands how to do other every activities such as cooking or cleaning and thus should always be wanted.
We, once fragile and weak organisms, who were prey to many predators have now risen to the top of the food chain through our other ability which was our high levels of intelligence, however, where back then when we didn’t know much about anything, we were masters at what we did know. Today where our arsenal of technology has expanded so much, we have actually become less knowledgeable of the things we think know. The result of this produces dependence for everyone as everyone relies of the bits of imcomplete knowledge others have to fulfill their own needs. Whether you are included in this group of people or not it is also recommended that you share this with others for their sake and yourwhole community as a whole. Imagine if you had the ability to fix your own car and the amount you saved for not going to a mechanic and let that sink in and speak for itself. Your independence could unlock new opportunities.
